Music to Your Ears? Smartphone or Mp3 Player?

Some people are literally joined at the hand to their smartphone. They do not walk out of one room into another without it, sometimes even taking it to the bathroom with them. While some people are busy playing games, checking emails and texting friends with their smartphone, others use theirs almost exclusively for music.

People who do not have a smartphone just yet might wonder if they should consider upgrading for the music capabilities or if they would be better served keeping their lower end phone and choosing a dedicated music source instead. It depends on what you are looking for, music wise and what you find acceptable. It also might depend on where you plan to get the bulk of your music: streaming music from various sources or from music downloads.

What Kind of Sound Quality is Okay With You?

If your taste in music runs to the banal and the bland, sound quality is unlikely to be a major purchasing decision. Face it, the speakers on a smartphone are a little limited in the quality that they can produce for you. You may be able to use certain apps to get streaming music and even a video converter but you won’t get the full rich sound quality that you get from a real, dedicated music source. Smartphone speakers were just not designed to give thumping basses and clear high notes like real speakers are.

A Limit of Actions: MP3 Players That Only Play Music

An MP3 player plays music as it is intended to sound as does your home or car stereo system. But, that is all that they are able to do. The MP3 player is portable, of course, but the others are not. You have to be in your car to enjoy the car stereo and your home stereo is usually too big to cart around. You can’t use them to text a friend or make a call if you need to.

The answer might be to use both- the smartphone can be a great way to listen to streaming music when you are out and about, using certain apps like Pandora or Jango. You can switch to better music sources when you are at home or in your car. You might even use the smartphone for things like jogging in place of other music devices which can increase your safety while you are out on the trails.
